Chain of Command – Normandy: Protecting a Vital Crossroad

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on December 6, 2021 by RichardDecember 6, 2021

The American paratrooper were tasked with holding a vital crossroad to disrupt German reinforcements. The Americans were holed up in stone houses with open fields on one side and dense intermittent woods on the other with the addition of some tanks that made it through German lines. A German machine gun battalion approached from the wooded area and took up a defensive position behind a stone fence line and proceeded to pound an American platoon guarding the crossroad. The German were waiting for armour reinforcements from the field side of the stone houses.

Once the German armour (Brian) arrived, the German infantry (Richard) called in the heavy mortars against American paratroopers guarding the crossroads. The Americans tried to retreat to the stone houses but were caught in the open and pinned down by the mortar barrages. The American infantry (Steve) were rendered inoperable. After that, the wooded area area stayed static.

On the field side, a fierce armour battle was ensuing. The American armour (Lee) at first crippled the German armour (Brian) and rendered them immobile but still combat ready. After a bitter duel, all the American armor was destroyed. The American paratroopers surrendered and they were assumed interred in a camp. They were found after the American Normandy victory under the field. The GM (Jim) was found with the remains with a mobile communications device clinched in his hand.

Massive Darkness – Scorched Earth (Scenario 1) – Part 1

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on October 25, 2021 by RichardOctober 25, 2021

Massive Darkness brings the classic fantasy RPG experience to modern board gaming, with an action-packed campaign chock full of gorgeous miniatures and a streamlined system that keeps the focus on the heroes’ actions, with no need for a game master to control the enemies.

Using the popular Zombicide system as a starting point, Massive Darkness adds all the richness of a dungeon crawl RPG. Pick your hero, choose a class, decide on which skills to spend your XP, and get loot by searching the dungeon or killing special enemies that can use the equipment against you! Face a multitude of different enemy types, coming in all shapes and sizes, whose behavior is resolved automatically…or you can try to sneak around enemies by taking advantage of dark areas of the map.

Players begin their adventure in Massive Darkness by picking a Hero – each with two special starting skills – and pair them with a Class of their choosing. Depending on the combination, another skill can be unlocked, giving players a wide range of choices and play styles. In Massive Darkness, the created Heroes go on Quests, killing monsters, collecting loot, and gaining XP. Players spend their XP to unlock new Skills, growing more powerful as the Quest progresses.

Throughout the game, players encounter different monsters, including Minions, Agents, Roaming Monsters, and Bosses. An unique mechanism of the game is the Guardian. Any of the monster types have a chance of spawning as a Guardian, meaning it will use a random piece of equipment in the fight against Heroes. However, if players are able to overcome this difficult encounter, they will acquire that piece of loot!

How to Play Video

Scorched Earth (Scenario 1) – Recover some artifacts hidden in the Darkness, and use them to destroy this evil nest.

Part 1 – This was a learning episode for us.. Jim, of course, skipped the learning scenario and setup the full meal deal. We had quite a learning curve with going back and forth to the rules and backing up a few steps and “henceforth we will do it this way”..

The Battle for Carentan, 1944 – Battle Among the Hedges

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on October 18, 2021 by RichardOctober 19, 2021

It has been a hard slog since we landed five days ago, but we have been giving the Germans one hell of a time! The fighting has been tough, against both enemy regulars and what appear to be more experienced paratroop forces, but slowly we have pushed them to the Southeast. With St. Come-duMont secured to the North, we are ready to proceed across the Douve and take the important town of Carentan. The division has formed up and we established positions across the Douve River just yesterday, so we are next up on the line. This is the first jump that the 101st has really been a part of, but the boys are fired up and ready to take it to them.

Normandy has been set alight with the onset of the Allied invasion, and we are in the thick of it! You and your men were of the few that made it out of St. Come-du-Mont before it was seized by the Americans. Quickly heading South and crossing the Douve River you met up with friendly forces. Now back at the front, you and your men have been tasked with the defense of the key town of Carentan. This area is proving to be of vital importance as it appears to be the link up position between two Allied landings on the coast.

The Germans defended the hedgerows (Richard) and the building at the crossroads (Jerry). The building at the crossroads caught fire and the smoke obscured most of the middle of the field. The American right flank (Lee) slowly advanced through across the field while the left flank (Chris) was stopped in the open by fire from both the German left and right flanks. The Americans decided to withdraw from the field.

The following day, the Americans continued their attack on the German positions. The American right flank (Lee) attempted to advance from the extreme right flank around a minefield but was taking fire from the Germans (Jerry). The American left flank (Chris) laid down a smoke screen and advanced through the smoke toward the German right flank (Richard). The German right flank was not completely reinforced with only two sections deployed. When the American were just about to the hedgerows, the smoke cleared and charged the German reinforced position. The Americans routed the Germans out of one reinforced position but took heavy losses and were pinned. The American weapon teams were wiped out from German fire (Jerry) and their second section charged the second German reinforced position (which had already taken severe casualties from American fire). The Americans took heavy casualties and were forced to routed. A fresh German section deployed and opened fire on the remaining unpinned American section in the open and the Americans took severe casualties with the loss of a junior and senior leader. At this point, the American command structure fell apart and both the American right and left flanks had no command structure. A decisive victory for the Germans.

Chain of Command: Securing St-Come-du-Mont (pt 3)

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on October 11, 2021 by RichardOctober 11, 2021

A meeting engagement of the American 101st Airborne (Richard and Lee) and German Infantry (Jim and Jerry). The Germans occupied the towne (Jerry) and and an adjacent wooded area (Jim). The Americans (Richard) launched an initial attacked on the towne but fell back when the heavy mortars were deployed. The Germans in the towne were pinned and pounded through the rest of the attack. The Germans (Jim) then attacked the the Americans (Lee) across the road. Lee returned fire and the sides continued to exchange fire. The Americans (Richard) launched a flank attack against a light machine gun unit (Jerry) and destroyed them. Richard also called in a second mortar attack against the Germans (Jim) in the woods and pinned them and proceeded to pound them. Germans called a stop to the battle since they were all pinned and taking damage.
