Descent – Legends of the Dark : The Watch Tower

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on August 28, 2023 by RichardSeptember 5, 2023

The heroes investigated a baronial watchtower and defeated Ne Krul, a sinister Uthuk Y’Ilan blood witch.

A watchtower deep within Forthyn’s borders had been seized by Uthuk raiders. There was evidence within the tower of a growing threat to Forthyn, as the Uthuk raids became more brazen and widespread.

Ne’Krul was using a nearby site of great power to commune with an entity within the hellish realm of the Ynfernael.
Her minions hoped to sacrifice the tower’s residents to aid her ritual.

Lee and I played the first scenario. Brinn (warrior – Lee), Galaden (huntsman – Richard) and Syrus (human prodigy – Richard). The objective for this portion was to kill enemies. First foe was a wolf. Galaden and Syrus took it out at long range. A berserker attacked next. Long range weapons reduce it and Brinn finished it off. A bandit appeared and Brinn took care of it.d There was a tree which Syrus obtained some fruit and ingredients. A chest which Brinn obtained some supplies and a well which give Galaden heal.

The party then went through an an archway and up stairs to a second level. There was a bandit which was dispatched with long range weapons. This area had two doors leading to two barracks plus a locked iron gate. Objective for this section was to obtain keys to open the iron gate.

One barrack contained a table (Syrus: map, recipe, key) and a chest (Galaden: stuff and key). The second barracks (Syrus: bookcase stuff and key) and a dying solder (Brinn: key and vigor potions)

Opened locked gate on third level. Contained a bandit and berserker torturing two villagers on ritual table. Brinn (who ended up wounded) and Galedan killed the baddies while Syrus rescued the villagers.

An archway led to a level two down. Caldron, ritual lectern with the evil big baddie NeKral the red witch. She started summoning other baddies but the were in the second level room and would take time to move forward.

The grand battle began with all the heroes taking infections and scarring. After an extended period, Syrus finished off the witch. The game was won.

Core gameplay mechanisms such as combat, fatigue, skills, items, and more have received completely new interpretations with Legends of the Dark, while a new approach to scenario layout and 3D terrain creates striking multi-level scenarios.

Gameplay is fast and intuitive. You take three actions each turn: one maneuver action and two additional actions of your choice. Maneuvering gives you movement points, as shown in the upper right corner of the character sheet, and since you always have a maneuver action, you can reposition to put yourself in a more advantageous position for attack. Other than maneuvering, you can use an action to attack an enemy, rolling your attack dice and drawing upon your hero’s abilities and weapons to deal maximum damage or inflict harmful conditions on your foes, or you may use the explore action to interact with a piece of 3D terrain or a token by using the app. You can also use your action to perform one of the most crucial actions in Legends of the Dark: the ready action, which lets you flip your hero sheet or one of your cards to its opposite side, unlocking new abilities!

Your hero sheet isn’t the only thing you can ready. Every hero also has an attack card and skill cards! Each hero starts the game with two weapon cards, which are sleeved together back-to-back to create a single attack card. Skill cards can also be readied, switching between two complementary abilities.

The app also brings new changes to gameplay, introducing enemies with adaptable strategies, complex status effects, and triggers fully managed by the app, and the ability to develop your heroes based on the choices you make in scenarios. You’ll also uncover a wealth of activity between scenarios, such as crafting, shopping in the city, upgrading equipment, and more. Because of these various differences, Descent: Legends of the Dark is not compatible with Descent: Journeys in the Dark and its expansions.

Mansions of Madness – Horrific Journey

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on August 26, 2023 by RichardAugust 26, 2023

In the skies above the Atlantic, a dirigible’s peaceful journey is interrupted by a bloody act of revenge and an oncoming storm. On the sea far below, a treacherous saboteur plants the explosives that will sink a ship. In the New England countryside, a train billows black smoke, desperately fleeing an unimaginable threat.

Horrific Journeys is a deluxe expansion for Mansions of Madnesswhich unlocks three thrilling scenarios that take four new investigators far from Arkham, solving mysteries aboard a bustling transatlantic airship, a luxury ocean liner, and a scenic countryside train. With new map tiles, puzzles, monsters, and mythos events, these brave men and women must contend with hideous amphibian monstrocities and interdimensional creatures tearing holes in the fabric of reality all with the knowledge that one wrong move can destroy the very vessels they are trying to protect! In order to arrive at their destinations, the investigator of Arkham must first survive their journey!

Lee and Richard setup the Atlantic Ocean crossing scenario which was rated as 5 of 5 stars for difficulty. We managed to escape the sinking ship in the life boat after saving two passengers. But, we never found any clues as to who sabotaged the ship. So, the computer indicated we had lost.

Mansions of Madness

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on August 14, 2023 by RichardAugust 14, 2023

Mansions of Madness: Second Edition is a fully co-operative, app-driven board game of horror and mystery for one to five players that takes place in the same universe as Eldritch Horror and Elder Sign. Let the immersive app guide you through the veiled streets of Innsmouth and the haunted corridors of Arkham’s cursed mansions as you search for answers and respite. Eight brave investigators stand ready to confront four scenarios of fear and mystery, collecting weapons, tools, and information, solving complex puzzles, and fighting monsters, insanity, and death. Open the door and step inside these hair-raising Mansions of Madness: Second Edition. It will take more than just survival to conquer the evils terrorizing this town.

Lee and I decided to go back to an old favorite. We had to stop a ritual. I grabbed the ritual equipment and dashed for he exit. Three deep ones, a cultist, a warlord, and wizard stood between us and the exit. We managed to evade the hordes with Lee talking most of the damage and being wounded to get me through the entrance for us to win the game.
