Arkham Horror

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on March 14, 2024 by RichardMarch 14, 2024

The year is 1926, and it is the height of the Roaring Twenties. Flappers dance till dawn in smoke-filled speakeasies, drinking alcohol supplied by rum runners and the mob. It’s a celebration to end all celebrations in the aftermath of the War to End All Wars.

Yet a dark shadow grows in the city of Arkham. Alien entities known as Ancient Ones lurk in the emptiness beyond space and time, writhing at the thresholds between worlds. Occult rituals must be stopped and alien creatures destroyed before the Ancient Ones make our world their ruined dominion.

Only a handful of investigators stand against the Arkham Horror. Will they prevail?

Arkham Horror (Third Edition) is a cooperative board game for one to six players who take on the roles of investigators trying to rid the world of eldritch beings known as Ancient Ones. Based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft, players will have to gather clues, defeat terrifying monsters, and find tools and allies if they are to stand any chance of defeating the creatures that dwell just beyond the veil of our reality.

Ancient Civilisations of the Middle East

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on March 5, 2024 by RichardMarch 5, 2024

We played a game Sunday and Tuesday.

Sunday game was a 5 player scenario. Jim, Lee, Richard, Steve and Wayne,. Everyone initially caused natural disasters and civil unrest in Eqypt (Richard). Jim (Scythian) invaded Egypt from the fair eastern side of the board. The Hittities attached the Egyptian fleets. Meanwhile, the middle civilizations were allowed to flourish. Jim fighting now a two front war (plus barbarians), ended up in next to last place, Egypt finished last, Scythian fourth, the Hittites,(who isolated themselves) third, while the Assyrians took second and Wayne (Medie-Persia) was the winner by only one victory point over second. Hugh gap between the top two and the rest of us meer mortals.

Tuesday’s game was a three player scenario Lee (Hittite), Richard (Egypt) and Steve (Assyrian). Once again everyone tried to wipe out the Egyptians (who later came back with a vengeance but a sudden end of the 4th Epoch on the first turn dashed all hope). The Assyrians took first, hollowed by Egypt and finally the Hittites.

ACME is and interesting game and quite brutal at times, A civilisation can go from the most powerful to a wreck in a flash (but its VP will remain). All you need is a good disaster.

Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East – Next Sunday

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on February 26, 2024 by RichardFebruary 26, 2024

If you liked Ancient Civilizations of the Inner Sea, you are going to love Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East!

Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East (ACME) is brought to you by the same team that created Ancient Civilizations of the Inner Sea —designers Christopher Vorder Bruegge and Mark McLaughlin with developer Fred Schachter. ACME is not a sequel nor an expansion but a stand alone game using the same multiplayer and solitaire systems as its predecessor with many new and exciting features to intrigue its players.

ACME is a game of the chaos-inducing wrath of gods & men—a chaos each player does their utmost to manage, survive, and guide their civilization through to triumphant victory. Spanning the ancient world from the Hellespont to the Indus, from the Caspian to the Red Sea, and from the early Bronze Age to the Hellenic Age, Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East allows you to command not just 10 but 17, SEVENTEEN CIVILIZATIONS!

If you want a War Game, you got it. If you want a friendly game, this is it too! As in Ancient Civilizations of the Inner Sea, Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East can be all about war, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be a friendly game of exploration, city building, trade, and faith. Players (solitaire, a group of up to six, or even a mix of live players with a system-driven civilization of two or more) can make of ACME what they wish or imagine. Competition can be martial or cultural, warlike or friendly, or a combination of both—how the game unfolds depends entirely on how the players want it to play. The duration of the game is also up to the players: from a multi-hour odyssey of all four Epochs to a pre-arranged shorter contest of an hour or two or to an agreed Sudden Death Victory Point threshold.

Game is fairly new and since it is a GMT game that isn’t hardcore wargaming, not a lot of how to videos.. there are two and one is horrid. Here is the better.

Dune: Imperium Uprising

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on February 26, 2024 by RichardFebruary 26, 2024

Lee, Steve and Richard (Lady Jessica) played the third round of Dune: Imperium Uprising. Each of us has won one game and the game Tuesday will be the tiebreaker. Richard continued to play a difficult character while Steve and Lee continue to play the same character over and over. (note: playing Lady Jessica I never got to use her card once). Steve won the game handedly using his normal collecting of intrigue cards that finally payed off once.

Yucatán

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on February 22, 2024 by RichardFebruary 22, 2024

In Yucatan, you are the leader of a Mayan city. You have promised your people to win the favors of the Gods, and their fate is in your hands. Send your warlords to capture enemies, increase your might with every season of the sacred calendar, and sacrifice your prisoners to the Mayan gods to ensure your dominance.

Your warlords will become more and more formidable, your city more and more glorious, but your opponents do the same, so enlisting the help of the mythological creatures and heroes will be necessary to try to restore with blood, the energy of your gods.

In this game, your goal is to capture prisoners, and the Yucatan peninsula is your playground. Prepare for four seasons of fierce fighting. At the end of each season, you will ritually sacrifice captured enemies to gain reputation, but be careful because the gods are demanding: Each of your sacrifices must be more glorious than the last. Each decision matters in the subtle balance required to make your city the glorious and eternal sanctuary of the mighty Mayan gods.
