Pandemic

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on November 7, 2023 by RichardNovember 10, 2023

In Pandemic, several virulent diseases have broken out simultaneously all over the world! The players are disease-fighting specialists whose mission is to treat disease hotspots while researching cures for each of four plagues before they get out of hand.

The game board depicts several major population centers on Earth. On each turn, a player can use up to four actions to travel between cities, treat infected populaces, discover a cure, or build a research station. A deck of cards provides the players with these abilities, but sprinkled throughout this deck are Epidemic! cards that accelerate and intensify the diseases’ activity. A second, separate deck of cards controls the “normal” spread of the infections.

Taking a unique role within the team, players must plan their strategy to mesh with their specialists’ strengths in order to conquer the diseases. For example, the Operations Expert can build research stations which are needed to find cures for the diseases and which allow for greater mobility between cities; the Scientist needs only four cards of a particular disease to cure it instead of the normal five—but the diseases are spreading quickly and time is running out. If one or more diseases spreads beyond recovery or if too much time elapses, the players all lose. If they cure the four diseases, they all win!

The 2013 edition of Pandemic includes two new characters—the Contingency Planner and the Quarantine Specialist—not available in earlier editions of the game.

Lee and Richard played two games. The first Richard surrendered on the third round being surround by ancients and no way to get any resources or take turns. The second game Richard won by a narrow margin.

Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy – Practice Game

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on October 23, 2023 by RichardNovember 10, 2023

Lee (Terrain Republic) and Richard (Hegemony) watched the YouTube videos and were confident enough to try a practice game with rules in hand.

We played the first 2 rounds of the continuing game and found the rules fairly simple to run through once the basics were learned. We have yet to get into the numerous other player turn selections.

Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy

Central Texas Board Game and Miniatures Posted on October 14, 2023 by RichardOctober 14, 2023

Eclipse is a 4X strategy game where you must lead your civilization to prevail over the others. Players can choose to play as either a human or alien civilization. On each move, a player takes one of six actions: building, exploring, influencing, moving, researching or upgrading. For example, exploring opens up a new tile in a direction chosen by the exploring player. Each action uses resources (money, materials or science), and resource management is a key part of gameplay.

The galaxy is laid out in three rings of hex tiles, most of which get laid during exploration. At the start of play, only the galaxy center tile and tiles for the players’ respective home stars are laid. When exploring, a player chooses a tileless space which is accessible from a star the player occupies. The player then draws a new hex tile from a stack of face-down tiles and lays it in the chosen direction. The player may strategically choose which orientation the tile takes, to create links to existing tiles or to block access by other players.
